UCANEWS:
Attacks by an Islamic rebel splinter group in North Cotabato province resulted in five deaths on Monday in the latest fighting linked to southern Mindanao’s troubled peace process.
Armed militants of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), a breakaway group of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), attacked four villages at about 2am local time but were repelled by authorities.
A firefight, which peaked at about 8am, resulted in the deaths of four BIFF fighters and one soldier. Another soldier was wounded.
The rebels fled with 15 civilian hostages including 11 farmers whom they used as human shields to escape, said army spokesman Colonel Dickson Hermoso, as sporadic fighting continued in the area through the afternoon.

Two grenades were discovered at the cathedral in Bossangoa, a city of nearly 40,000 in the Central African Republic, the Fides news agency reported.
Members of Seleka, an Islamist rebel movement, seized power in the nation in March, and Christian institutions have suffered numerous attacks.
Más sobre Seleka aquí:
“The funding sources are worrisome. They are the same ones that funded the rebellions from Libya to Tunisia to Mali,” Territorial Administration Minister Jose Binoua said, implying that other countries like Chad are involved.
Some observers believe that even if the rebellion is mostly made up of former Central African rebels, it also includes “former members of the Central African Armed Forces (FACA), as well as Chadian, Sudanese and Nigerian mercenaries” — claims the rebels deny.
According to Marchal, “given the rebellion’s origins in the north, we can assume there are many Muslims in their ranks.”

GMBW:
An Egyptian court on Monday banned the Muslim Brotherhood from carrying out any activities in the country and ordered the seizure of the group’s funds, widening a campaign to debilitate the Islamist movement of deposed President Mohamed Mursi.
‘The court bans the activities of the Muslim Brotherhood organization and its non-governmental organization and all the activities that it participates in and any organization derived from it,’ said the presiding judge Mohammed al-Sayed.
The court ordered the government to seize the Brotherhood’s funds and administer its frozen assets.

“There are no victims only because the shots were fired at night,” Archbishop Jean-Clément Jeanbart told the Fides news agency. “The city is strangled and the situation is worsening day by day. As citizens we feel trapped, and do not know what our fate will be. We have a short supply of goods.”
